A Social History of the Woburn Public Library, 1856-1879

September 8, 2008

7:00 p.m.
Woburn Memorial High School Auditorium
88 Montvale Avenue, Woburn MA

Presented by Sue Ellen Holland, John McElhiney and Tom Doyle

Photographs, stories and rare documents will be used to illustrate the seldom told story of the birth and growth of Woburn's own public library. From the first years of the Library at the old town hall, to the new Library designed by the greatest American architect of the age, H.H. Richardson, the talk will shine a light on the colorful personalities and remarkable achievements of the Library’s founders. Discover what motivated leather baron Jonathan Bowers Winn, painter Albert Thompson, antiquarian and librarian George Champney and a host of other individuals who made this dream a reality.

Button End Stories by Bruce Allen

7:00 p.m.
Joyce Middle School
55 Locust Street, Woburn MA

Bruce Allen was born in the family home at 12 Olympia Avenue in the Button End section of Woburn, the youngest of four sons. He describes Button End as a multi-ethnic section of Woburn where he grew up and he remembers it well. It's gone now, with its mélange of accents, aromas and customs, but returns to life when Allen tells his Button End Stories. A gifted storyteller, Bruce Allen transforms Button Enders simple stories into elegant parables which will both entertain and touch you deeply.
