The Woburn Historical Society is
pleased to announce its lineup of programs for the next several months.
During February and March, a Military
Exhibit featuring photos, artifacts and memorabilia will be featured at
the Burdett Mansion, home of the Woburn Historical Society located at 7
Mishawum Road. The exhibit will get underway with a grand opening on
Saturday, February 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The exhibit will continue to be open to the
public on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturday
mornings from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. During
the open house, Kathy Lucero will be accepting
applications from war veterans, or family members of a war veteran, who would
like their name to be added on the new War Memorial on Woburn Common. The Military
Exhibit will run through March 31.
On Monday evening, February 13th, the
Society is supporting the Burbeen Lecture Series program, Middlesex Canal – Woburn’s First Interstate,
Then and Now. The program will
explore the history and the workings of the Middlesex Canal, Woburn's first
"super highway." The program
will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Woburn Memorial High School auditorium and is free
to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments
will be served.
In an effort to make parking
easier for its members, the Society's programs in March and April will be held
on Sunday evenings at 6:00 p.m. On March
25th, well-known radio talk show host, columnist and author, Howie Carr, will
speak at the high school auditorium. He will detail the history of
Boston's underworld, including that of Whitey Bulger, probably the area's most
notorious underworld figure.
On Sunday, April 22nd, at 6:00 p.m., the
Society’s program presentation will detail the history of the Choate Hospital
and the many doctors and nurses who worked there over the years. Program
Director Kathy Lucero is still seeking pictures, records and any other
artifacts that can be featured during the presentation. She would also
like to talk to anyone who worked at Choate Hospital in the old days or until
it’s closing in 1989. Anyone with Choate
Hospital mementos or anyone who worked there can call the Society headquarters
at 781-933-5002.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We are planning a Woburn veterans' exhibit at the Burdett Mansion in February. We need pictures, artifacts and memorabilia from all wars.
We are planning a program on the Choate Hospital for April and need pictures, artifacts and memorabilia about the doctors, nurses and other employees who worked at the Choate.

The Woburn Historical Society's Board of Directors has approved a motion to name the conference room at the Burdett Mansion in honor of the late Woburn historian John McElhiney. It is now the John D. McElhiney conference room. A nicely framed portrait of John now hangs on the wall.

Our winter hours at the Burdett Mansion are Tuesdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, starting on Tuesday January 17, 2012.
